Arguments in Philosophy

The Philosophy class spend most of today in argument.  No fighting was involved, however.  Rather, they were looking at the formal structure of arguments.  Students spent time creating their own examples of particular argument forms that illustrated validity and invalidity.  They had great fun in producing their own versions of classic fallacies.  One example:

All cats have four legs.
My dog has four legs.
Therefore my dog is a cat.

We also introduced the philosopher Descartes.  His aim was to express philosophy as a series of logical arguments, like mathematics, and in that way to formalise knowledge.  Tomorrow we shall consider whether he succeeded.
