Discovery Debate: week 3 at Winchester!

 

 

"This House believes that the age limit for smoking, drinking, voting, consent and driving should be 18 or above."

 

 

 

Eight intrepid debaters gathered this week in the 'house', aka room A5 to play language games, get to know each other, share ideas and experience, choose a debate topic, research that topic, prepare and practise speeches and then have a formal debate in a quasi House of Commons style. Their chosen motion is above and turned out to be quite controversial! 

 

The proposing team was composed of Sonya, Henri, Leona & Lalo (Eduardo); in opposition were Gabby, Marc, Ken & Takahiro.

 

Before the debate we took a vote, so that afterwards we could see to what extent, if any, people's opinions had been swayed by the arguments of the opposing and proposing teams. Here are the results:

 

First vote: for: 3; against: 1; abstentions: 4

Second vote: for: 4; against: 4

 

So....the team for the opposition were more successful in persuading others to their way of thinking! Congratulations to all contributors!
