Punting, parks and professors: Excursion to Oxford

On Saturday we visited the historic city of Oxford, home to the second-oldest university in the world. First all of the students went ‘punting’ – this involves using a large pole to propel boats in shallow water, and is a great way to see Oxford up close.

Activity leaders then led students around some of the buildings which make up Oxford University. We were really privileged to have a tour from the Junior Dean of New College, who gave students an insider’s view of what life is like at an Oxford college.

After students had explored some more of Oxford’s stunning backstreets (including the famous Bridge of Sighs), we visited the Ashmolean Museum, the world’s first university museum. Students saw some of the world’s finest archaeological remains, housed next to artworks by Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Raphael, as well as home-grown artists such as J.M.W. Turner.
